Cognitive Load Theory

This is a sample course I created after taking a Storyline class. It is not a complete course as I was limited to the 30 days free trial. It does need more audio to replace text and more images to align with cognitive load theory, but my time ran out. To complete this I would make it a 2 part course. Part 1 would be the content seen here, and Part 2 would get into Mayer’s 12 Multimedia Principles.

TOOLS USED:

  • Articulate Storyline
  • SnagIt 2022

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Instructional designers and specifically eLearning developers

PROBLEM:

Many trainers and instructional designers are not familiar with cognitive load theory- especially if they do not have a degree in instructional design.  I consider a thorough understand of cognitive load theory and Mayer’s Multimedia Principles foundational knowledge essential for all instructional designers, but especially eLearning developers.

As a former Adobe Captivate Certified professional (2020-2022) and long-term user (10+ years) this was my first foray into Articulate. (I have since worked a full time Articulate only eLearning job).  Here are my thoughts about Articulate Storyline versus Captivate 2019.

What I liked about Articulate Storyline

  • Storyline is much easier to learn than Captivate. If you already know Captivate, learning Articulate should be easy. The reverse is not true in my experience working with new IDs who came in knowing Articulate but new to Captivate.
  • You can cue your audio for syncing animations.
  • It’s simple to add character state changes.
  • You can easily control the play bar from slide to slide.
  • Less experienced users would find triggers easier than writing script for advanced actions.
  • Lightboxes were fun (but Captivate has a QuickStart slide that does the same thing).
  • Layers were handy, but you can do the same thing with state change in Captivate.
  •

What I did not like about Articulate Storyline

  • The graphic editing options within Storyline leave much to be desired.
  • The image library available within Articulate does not have the same quality of images as Adobe Stock.
  • Quirky button set feature requires you to first insert your shapes for the buttons and make them the button set before adding icons to the button.
