How to Write an Impact Analysis for a Software Release

This is a short course (approximately 20 slides) developed specifically for my portfolio.

TOOLS USED:

Course was developed using:

  • Adobe Captive 2019
  • Photoshop 2022
  • SnagIt 2022

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is designed for instructional designers who update training materials for software but may not know the software very well.

PROBLEM:

Most new IDs come to Black Knight with no experience writing training for software releases. I remember how overwhelmed and lost I felt when I was asked to write my first impact analysis for a software release.  I did not even know the my products, and,  like my new coworkers, I was under the mistaken impression that to write training for my assigned products I really had to know my product very well.  All our new IDs struggle with this. I have learned that while it is helpful to know the software, you can write an impact analysis even if you don’t know the product well simply by knowing what to look for in the enhancements. Then with the guidance from your SME, who will sign off on the impact analysis, you can easily update training.

Because how I felt as a new ID was still fresh in my mind 5 years later, I volunteered regularly to mentor our new IDs on this topic and created my own mini-curriculum for this.  I realized that this would translate well to an eLearning course to use in my portfolio as well.

This course was created specifically for my portfolio and as such I own the rights to all the content and can provide a full script.
